To grandparents' house we go...

We have an awful lot to be thankful for this year. Thanksgiving Day was our first big outing- which means we took the girls to my parents' house in Erie, and did two feedings there. Not such a big deal, you might think, but it is for us. Since it currently requires 7 specifically shaped pillows for me to feed the girls simultaneously, it is quite an undertaking to do it elsewhere. We actually did their second feeding sequentially and I even casually breastfed Mae at the dining room table while I ate my dessert. That made me feel like quite an accomplished mom! The girls were well-behaved and took a long enough nap for us to eat dinner, so it was a nice day all around.

I think my parents and Grandma Bundy enjoyed getting to see all the grandchildren. Here are our girls with their 9-month old cousin, Ella, in a picture I'll call "The Year of the Granddaughters"

Happy Thanksgiving!

Uncle Dick and Aunt Marti

Adi and Mae met their great-uncle Dick and great-aunt Marti yesterday. They are in town for a family wedding. Here is Adi in each of their arms:

Smiles!

We've started to get smiles in the last week- finally, we captured Adeline on film!

Meredith has been a little less free with her smiles but they are very rewarding when you get one.

The girls' Auntie Henri (Dave's sister Leen) brought some outfits over from France. The girls are just outgrowing them.

Meredith
Adeline
"Mom, will you quit taking pictures and just feed us? Can't you tell we're hungry? Can't you? Can't you?!!?"

Cousins

Dave's cousins, Kelly and Megan, came by to make us dinner on Friday night and helped with the babies. Here they are with Meredith.

Bottle feeding the girls has been more of a challenge than we'd anticipated. Meredith gulps it down- she could drink 5 oz in 5 minutes, I think. And when you stop her to burp, she screams like she was being tortured. It's strange because, although she is the faster eater at the breast, she doesn't mind stopping to burp.

And Adeline is opposite- she barely drinks from the bottle. Dave spends a lot of time taking it away saying, "you've got to suck! You're just chewing!" She'll be at it for 10 minutes and it turns out she only took 5 mL.

We thought the breast feeding was going to be the difficult part but that's going well. I feed them simultaneously and can do it by myself (although it is easier when Dave or one of my parents can burp a baby and take whoever finishes first away for a diaper change). But the bottle feeding is so challenging that Dave has only done it a few times. Unfortunately, this means that I can't really get away from the girls for too long unless we have two people lined up to watch them. (Fortunately, my parents are happy to come over to help).

First outing

On Saturday we went to a meeting of the Boulder County twins' club. It was the first outing for the girls other than doctor's appointments.

Thanks to Samantha for knitting the cute hats!

No longer newborns

At their 1-month doctor's appointment, Meredith weighed in at 8 lbs 13 oz and Adeline is up to 8 lbs 11 oz. That puts them in the 50th percentile for weight, and they are also in the same for length (they've each gained 2 inches!) and head circumference. This is quite an increase: at 1-week they were in the 10th percentile for weight. It'll be interesting to see if they were just making up for being crowded in utero or are going to keep gaining on the rest of the population.

We're interested to know if their heights will take after me or Dave, but I doubt I was ever in the 50th percentile for any size, so maybe that means they'll be tall? I'm pretty much resigned to ending up the shortest one in the family anyway.

And they've moved out of the newborn diapers, both in disposable and cloth. They swim in the new size, since they will go up to 16 pounds, but the old ones were getting pretty tight. So our little girls are no longer newborns by that definition.
