The living is easy

These pictures were taken a few weeks ago, but the weather this weekend was just as good. Adi's on the left; Mae's in the sunglasses with "Uncle" Buck (on the deck Dave built last summer).

And life is pretty good, here in the Coleman household. The girls are sleeping well at night and their daytime naps are getting better. They are so delightful right now: on Friday I noticed that Adi would reliably laugh whenever I kissed her belly. Mae is experimenting with using coughing to communicate; Adi is squealing and screaming, often above the range of her rather deep voice. When Dave was playing peek-a-boo with her yesterday, Adi started to pull the cloth off her own face. Then Mae started to do it today! It is easy to just watch one of them as she stares intently at one thing, swings her head around to stare at something else, looks at me or her dad and breaks out into a smile.

Or when holding a toy: she'll hold it in front of her face with both hands, just staring at it as if she could absorb it through her eyes. Then slowly bringing it to her mouth, going cross-eyed trying to watch it while she licks it, gnaws on it, moves her head from side to side to feel it against her lips.

I think its only this month that they've gotten so good with their hands. They will grab any toy offered in front of them and are very adept at picking up toys while lying on their backs. So now we just scatter toys around them when they are on the floor; they put them in their mouths, shake them, and often end up throwing them out of their reach. We've read books about milestones and it is fascinating to see them reach them: a toy that starts on the right side of a baby, for instance, will suddenly be on the left. (Or pulling the cloth during the peek-a-boo game).

They are getting quite stable at sitting, which makes it almost possible to sit them in your lap.

Dave is home from the walk he just took them on, so that's it for now!

Standing tall

Mae started it, at about three months- she always wants to stand. But lately Adi has been catching on, too, and now both girls can stand with only help balancing.

The ball

The ball rolls left...
the ball rolls right.
Hours of entertainment.

Can we brag?

Here is a quiz: Why are Meredith and Adeline so big?

a) Dani's daily bowl of ice cream
b) Dave's genes
c) Grandparents' overflowing love
d) All of the above

I'm guessing (d). Although I better go have that ice cream. After all, I need to support an extra 33.6 pounds! The official doctor's measurement put Meredith at 16.6 and Adeline at 17.0 lbs.

They've been increasing their weight ranking since they were born; at 1 week, they were in the 10th percentile, 1 month: 50th, 2 months: 75th. We thought maybe they had stabilized, that they'd still be in the 75th. But no: they now come in at a whopping 96 & 97th!

[caveat: this is compared to 4 months old babies, and they are actually 10 days *over* 4 months. so maybe that explains everything? are all the other babies weighed exactly at 4 months?]

We are feeling so lucky that they were not only born big and healthy but have continued to thrive.

Tasty toys

Our new favorite game:

"Can you grab it? Can you put it in your mouth?"
