Six Month Appointment and goodbye cradles

Well, we just got back from our six month appointment. The girls continue to grow at a rapid pace and continue to be almost exactly the same size. As different as they look, they sure measure out to be the same: 19lbs, 3oz. & 26.5/26.25".

As ever, the highpoint was the shots. Much wailing and gnashing of gums, but now we are home and they are napping quietly after a quick second-lunch.

Here are a pair of pictures of Adi the day we came home from the hospital and last week when we retired the cradles. She's grown just a little bit. Both girls are now much happier in their much larger cribs.

Can we brag?

Here is a quiz: Why are Meredith and Adeline so big?

a) Dani's daily bowl of ice cream
b) Dave's genes
c) Grandparents' overflowing love
d) All of the above

I'm guessing (d). Although I better go have that ice cream. After all, I need to support an extra 33.6 pounds! The official doctor's measurement put Meredith at 16.6 and Adeline at 17.0 lbs.

They've been increasing their weight ranking since they were born; at 1 week, they were in the 10th percentile, 1 month: 50th, 2 months: 75th. We thought maybe they had stabilized, that they'd still be in the 75th. But no: they now come in at a whopping 96 & 97th!

[caveat: this is compared to 4 months old babies, and they are actually 10 days *over* 4 months. so maybe that explains everything? are all the other babies weighed exactly at 4 months?]

We are feeling so lucky that they were not only born big and healthy but have continued to thrive.

No longer newborns

At their 1-month doctor's appointment, Meredith weighed in at 8 lbs 13 oz and Adeline is up to 8 lbs 11 oz. That puts them in the 50th percentile for weight, and they are also in the same for length (they've each gained 2 inches!) and head circumference. This is quite an increase: at 1-week they were in the 10th percentile for weight. It'll be interesting to see if they were just making up for being crowded in utero or are going to keep gaining on the rest of the population.

We're interested to know if their heights will take after me or Dave, but I doubt I was ever in the 50th percentile for any size, so maybe that means they'll be tall? I'm pretty much resigned to ending up the shortest one in the family anyway.

And they've moved out of the newborn diapers, both in disposable and cloth. They swim in the new size, since they will go up to 16 pounds, but the old ones were getting pretty tight. So our little girls are no longer newborns by that definition.
