"Christmas" in utah

After Christmas, we headed to Ogden, Utah to celebrate with Dave's family. They rented a house in the mountains so that we could all stay together: Grandma Hammer & Aunt Kathy, as well as Dave's parents, siblings and their spouses and children. Dave's aunt, uncle & cousins from Elko came too.

We tried to get all the grandchildren on Grandma Coleman's lap:
[Mae, Kaitlyn, Oliver, Adi, Colette,... and Pat, of course].

It was a very relaxing time, in a beautiful setting. The house was ridiculously large (really: 10,000 feet but poorly done)

so we were very comfortable. Here is Colette after an (apparently) exhausting horse-ride with "Uncle Buck", and Adi & Mae crawling all over Dave:

And the view from the front room:

Christmas

We celebrated Christmas at my parents house... Adi and Mae enjoyed wearing their dress shoes, opening presents, and most of all, playing with the "packing crinkles."

Nooooo....

It's just amazing to me how the girls' communication and interaction is increasing. True, most of their words are not recognizable unless you know what they mean, but it seems like every day I realize one of them is saying a syllable or two of a word, or knows what something is that I'm sure I never told her.

They've been having lots of fun with each other. On the way home from our after-Christmas travels, we were re-installing carseats in the airport parking lot and had Mae in a stroller and Adi close by propped up in the big hiking backpack. They couldn't reach each other but just looking at each other they were giggling and squealing with delight. Adi is still more affectionate toward Mae (so I usually peel her off after one or two hugs before Mae starts complaining) but Mae is generous with hugs when Adi is crying (and it often helps). Adi had a great time with her equally cuddly cousin, Colette, when we visited Dave's family. She says "awww" as she hugs someone (or something) which I guess she picked up from what we say to her.

The cute things that Mae is doing right now: She's obsessed with blowing her nose. She's able to spot a box of kleenex or napkins in any room and then presses on her nose saying "nay." She loves her baby sunglasses and we think she actually closes her eyes when she has them on, as she tends to stumble around and run into things. And my parents taught her how to close her eyes, which she does by squinting them tightly, smiling. She nods "yes" now and is very good about putting something back that she's not allowed to have. (Less good on the not touching it in the first place).

In anticipation of my old age, I taught Adi to give back massages. They're pretty short, yet, but she will rub your back for a second and say "sajjjj." I think she likes to have her back rubbed, too. My parents taught her how to fake a yawn from a picture in a book, although she'll rarely perform it for me. And she loves putting things in the trash (after she makes sure they're not edible), saying "tash" and then "clow" to close the cabinet doors.

To hurry up and down stairs, Dave started saying "go, go, go" which they'll both repeat now. And finally, in reference to the title of this post- we have some "no's". Adi is saying it more- a calm, slow "nyooooo" that is still endearing. Mae's is more simple and she shakes her head, too. We're working on "yes", too, but don't have more than an occasional nod and "esss".

We don't have pictures yet from the holidays (since we forgot our camera..) but here are some from last month.

Playing dress up in the "big girl clothes"

Ring around the rosie

The girls finally get the idea of holding hands to play 'ring around the rosie'

at least for a few moments

but the "falling down" concept is a little much.
